5 Reasons why Giving Free Quotes wins you more Work

If you’re a tradesman, you’ll be familiar with the idea of giving free quotes for your work. In some professions, this is completely normal, like painting and decorating. But for trades like heating and plumbing, it can be tempting to charge a call-out fee.

So what should you do? Should you charge a fee for diagnostics or advice? Our answer is no. And here are our reasons why.

1. It shows your expertise

Don’t underestimate the power of your knowledge. Customers want to know that you’re qualified to do the job, and sharing your tips will tell them this. Even if it’s a tip on how to fix a problem themselves or some DIY remodelling, it’ll show the customer that you’re an expert.

Even if you don’t make a sale on the first appointment with the customer, if you give them some free advice along with your quote they are bound to remember your name.

2. You’ll make customers aware of your brand

Free quotes give you the chance to show off your brand to customers looking to get a job done now, in the near future or even a year down the line.

Don’t be disheartened if a customer doesn’t accept your quote on the spot. A free quote shows that you are confident enough in your work to not have to charge for appointments.

3. You can tease your customers

Giving a free quote and then telling your customer how to fix something themselves is a good way to spark their interest. If your customer is looking to replace their kitchen, you could show them how to fit a cabinet door themselves. But don’t show them how to do the more specialised things, like tiling.

Your customers will soon realise that it’s much better to get a professional in to do the work, and they will remember you as you helped them do something instead of pressurising them into a sale.

4. You’ll get inside knowledge

If you give a free quote and are helpful in your approach, you’ll find that customers are much more willing to share advice they’ve had from other contractors. This is great for you – you can learn from your peers without having to ask them directly.

If your customer tells you that another company did something they were impressed by, you can soon copy that trick and see if it works on your customers.

5. You’re doing some good

No one likes to be charged over the odds, and by giving free quotes you’re doing a good deed. These days, most people expect a free quote, but go the extra mile. It always feels good to give a little extra.

Customers love getting something for free, so do something that makes you stand out from the crowd for free. You’ll soon find yourself winning more work.
